I used to think burnout was the enemy.
That if I worked too hard, pushed too far, or didn’t rest enough, I’d collapse into it. That burnout was what happened when we did too much.
But recently, I got curious.
I came across a post from someone I respect that said: “Burnout isn’t real. It’s a mindset.”
Instantly, I felt the trigger. My body contracted. My thoughts defended.
Because I have experienced burnout. Real, knock-you-down burnout. The kind that made me nap between coaching calls just to get through the day. So, to read someone calling it a mindset? It didn’t sit well—at first.
But instead of spiralling into righteousness, I paused.
This moment became a practice in psychological flexibility—one of the most powerful inner tools I’ve developed as a Soulful CEO.
And it changed everything.
What Is Psychological Flexibility—and Why It Matters
Psychological flexibility is the ability to sit with multiple truths, loosen our grip on rigid thinking, and stay open to new perspectives.
It’s not about abandoning what you believe.
It’s about becoming willing to try on new ways of thinking—even when they challenge your current view.
To be successful in business and in life, this skill is non-negotiable in my opinion.
Because let’s be real: as leaders, we’re constantly met with new information, unexpected feedback, failed launches, differing opinions—and if we’re not flexible in how we think and respond, we stay stuck.
So instead of resisting the post that triggered me, I let it become a doorway. I asked myself:
What if there’s some truth in the idea that burnout is a mindset?
The Reframe That Changed Everything
Here’s what I uncovered.
We often associate burnout with doing too much. But if that were entirely true, wouldn’t every ambitious, high-capacity entrepreneur be burnt out constantly?
I thought about the times I’ve worked long hours, hosted retreats, coached full rosters, and still felt energized. Not depleted. Because I was in alignment, fueled by purpose, and deeply connected to the work.
What if burnout isn’t about how much we’re doing—but about how we’re relating to the stress we experience?
Enter the distinction between two types of stress:
- Distress (the kind that depletes us)
- Eustress (the kind that grows us)
When we’re immersed in eustress—purposeful challenges, meaningful pursuits, creative tension—we grow. We’re activated. Alive. And often… we feel more energized because of it.
But when our relationship to stress is fear-based, when we interpret challenge as threat rather than opportunity—that’s when it tips into burnout.
Burnout as a Perception, Not a Condition
This reframe doesn’t invalidate burnout.
It doesn’t dismiss the exhaustion or overwhelm so many of us have felt.
But it does open the door to agency.
If burnout is tied to how we relate to stress—not just the presence of it—then we have more power than we think.
We get to ask:
- What’s the story I’m telling myself about this pressure?
- Is this stress serving me—or suffocating me?
- How can I shift my interpretation and reclaim my energy?
That shift alone is liberating. Because it means we don’t have to shrink our dreams to stay safe from burnout. We just need to build better relationships with pressure, stretch, and capacity.
The Practice of Becoming Unhooked
Every trigger—every moment of defensiveness, irritation, contraction—is a portal.
And the work of leadership isn’t just external growth—it’s learning how to not get hooked by every post, comment, failure, or opinion that challenges you.
Psychological flexibility gives you the power to pause, get curious, and ask: Is this still true for me? Or is there something new I’m being invited to see?
This isn’t about bypassing hard truths or gaslighting your experiences.
It’s about becoming the kind of leader who can hold nuance, expand your perspective, and evolve your beliefs, without making yourself wrong.
Because the more flexible you are in your thinking, the more unstoppable you become.
